The sound of '80s hit rock will sweep into Comerica Park this summer.
Journey and Def Leppard will play the Detroit Tigers' ballpark on July 13, part of a 58-show tour that pairs two of that era's enduring names. The summer-long run is being officially announced this morning after several days of online buzz.
Tickets for the Comerica Park show will go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Feb. 9. Information on pre-sale windows and VIP packages is expected in coming days.
Comerica Park is one of 10 stadiums on the co-headlining tour, which includes stops at Chicago's Wrigley Field and Boston's Fenway Park. The bands will swap out opening and closing slots throughout the tour, though there's no word yet on the running order in Detroit.
Journey and Def Leppard last teamed up in 2006, a lengthy North American run that included shows at DTE Energy Music Theatre and Grand Rapids' Van Andel Arena.
Individually, Journey and Def Leppard remain strong amphitheater draws, and DTE has been the go-to local destination for each band in recent years. Together, they'll aim to fill Comerica Park, which can hold about 40,000 for large-scale concerts.
The timing of the July 13 show will require a quick turnaround for Comerica Park staffers and Live Nation production personnel: As announced last week, Zac Brown Band is scheduled to play the stadium the following night.
The Tigers' groundskeeping squad will then have a few days to revert to baseball mode, with the team scheduled to return to Comerica Park to meet the Boston Red Sox on July 20.
